Could Mentorship Strengthen Our Local Business Community?

Mentorship is often treated as a career “must-have,” but not all mentoring is created equal. What an early-career professional needs looks very different from what a business owner or senior leader needs—and when mentoring doesn’t reflect that, it often falls flat.

At the same time, the demand for guidance is growing. Recent Gallup data shows only 31% of employees feel someone at work actively encourages their development, and LinkedIn research found that nearly 80% of professionals feel unprepared for the job market ahead. That points to a real mentorship gap—one that affects businesses of all sizes.

In local business communities like ours, mentorship has the potential to be a quiet advantage. Done well, it can:

  • Strengthen leadership and succession pipelines

  • Support small business growth and decision-making

  • Encourage collaboration across industries and generations

  • Reduce isolation for business owners and professionals

Chambers of Commerce are uniquely positioned to promote mentorship because they bring together people with shared roots, trust, and a commitment to the local economy. With the right structure, mentoring can be practical, time-bound, and genuinely useful—not another obligation.

That’s why the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce is assisting Currens & Associates in exploring whether a community-based mentoring effort could add real value to our local business ecosystem.

We Want Your Input

Before exploring any mentoring initiatives, we want to understand whether there is interest in our community—and what kind of mentoring would be most valuable. Please take a 2–3-minute survey to share your perspective. Input is welcome from Chamber members and the broader local business community.

Take the survey now.

Your feedback will help shape whether mentoring opportunities are worth exploring and what they might look like. Thank you for helping us build a stronger, more connected business community.
